Following initial pre-season scrimmages last Friday and on Tuesday, Pawhuska High School’s Lady Huskies’ softball team is to host the Hominy Lady Bucks at 3 p.m. Thursday.

On Saturday, the local field will be the site for Saturday’s PHS Alumni Softball Game — which is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. The exhibition event features past players of the Lady Huskies against this year’s varsity squad.

Olivia Chronister is beginning her third season as the PHS head coach after serving several year’s as an assistant. This year’s team features a large number of talented underclassmen along with numerous returnees from the 2013 squad.

With a team that included only two seniors, the Lady Huskies won six games during last year’s rebuilding campaign. During their recent summer league, the Lady Huskies managed five victories — despite playing 23 fewer games than last fall. The math definitely speaks of improvement.

Returning starters for PHS include Tanaya Thomas, Breanna Redeagle, Mary Jo Upchurch, Keylee Kirk, Sydney Sellers, Sarah Phillippi and Logan Tratzlaff.

Some repair work is still being done at the Pawhuska field following the removal of an abandoned gas well earlier this summer.

The 2014 regular campaign for the Huskies will start Aug. 11 and run through mid-September.
