Former PHS baseball player earns NOC academic honor

TONKAWA — Northern Oklahoma College baseball player Cameron Kirk of Pawhuska was one of four NOC student-athletes who recently earned Superior/Exemplary Academic Achievement awards through the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Eleven NOC Tonkawa student-athletes from five different sports received academic honors. The women’s basketball and softball teams from Tonkawa were named for NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year honors.

“Being a student-athlete requires a tremendous amount of sacrifice,” said NOC Athletic Director Jeremy Hise, noting the time spent practicing, participating and traveling. “For these young men and women to make the additional commitment to excel in the classroom is fantastic.”

The NJCAA has been recognizing the academic success of its student-athletes for more than three decades. During the 2013-14 academic year, the NJCAA saw 58,446 student-athletes compete on 3,705 teams in 28 different sports.

Of those competitors, 3.08 percent (or 1,799 student-athletes) were recognized with academic awards for their classroom achievements.
