Mabel Miles

Mabel Miles, longtime resident of Pawhuska, died Monday, May 12, 2014.

Viewing will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2014 at McCartney’s Johnson Funeral Home. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 19, at First Baptist Church South of Pawhuska with the Rev. Travis Finley officiating. Interment will be in the Pawhuska City Cemetery under the direction of McCartney’s Johnson Funeral Home.

Mabel Miles was born July 14, 1918, to Bennie and Bessie Shacklefoot Sr. in Mulhill, Okla. Her family moved to Crescent, Oklahoma in 1924, where her father died of pneumonia. After her father’s passing, Mabel’s grandmother moved her and her siblings to Pawhuska. She was the second of seven children.

She was married to Raymond “Jaybird” Miles for more than 50 years. He preceded her in death. Through this union, four children were born. Preceding her in death are daughters Barbara (Miles) Harris and Maxine (Miles) Brown; and son James Miles.

Mrs. Miles was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, where she served as treasurer. She was also a member of the Women’s American Legion Auxiliary Post 198.

Survivors include her brother Charles Shacklefoot of Pawhuska; daughter, June Gilkey and son-in-law Earl Gilkey of Pawhuska; daughter-in-law, Birdie Miles of Wichita, Kan.; grandchildren, James E. Miles Jr. of Springfield, Ill., Bobby Miles of Hollywood, Calif., Kevin Miles of Dallas, Texas, Ava Thompson of Tempe, Ariz., Treva Gilkey of Dallas, Texas, Sterling Gilkey of Frisco, Texas, Eronda Jackson of Columbia, S.C., Kenyetta Miles of Wichita, Kan., Jamie R. Miles of Newton, Kan.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
