Local American Legion post to host Veterans Day celebration event Sunday

A Veterans Day Celebration sponsored by Harold Bigheart Smalley American Legion Post 198 will be held on Sunday at the American Legion Building and Wah Zha Zhi Cultural Center at 1449 W. Main St.

Flag raising will be held at 11 a.m. in commemoration of Veterans Day precursor observance, Armistice Day, which annually recognized the official cessation of fighting in World War I “on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” — Nov. 11, 1918.

An invocation at 1:30 p.m. will be followed by singing during the afternoon and leading up to an evening meal at 5:30 p.m. There will be a War Dance starting at 7:30 p.m.

The head man dancer will be Nathaniel West and the head lady dancer is to be Dava Daylight. Head singer for the ceremony will be Kenneth Bills Sr.

Sadie Kathleen Sellers, the 2013-15 Osage princess, is to be introduced and the outgoing 2011-13 princess, Rachel White, will be honored.

John Henry Mashunakashey is scheduled to serve as the master of ceremonies. Arena directors will be Otto Hamilton and Lance Harden.
