Cigarette butt thrown out of car sunroof leads to man’s arrest

Smokey Bear would have likely approved as a motorist was jailed last week after reportedly throwing a burning cigarette out of the sunroof of his car.

James Douglas Kitchel, 41, was arrested Thursday by Bartlesville Police officers on charges of throwing a burning object onto a roadway, driving under suspension and no proof of insurance verification following the incident.

According to reports, a police officer was stopped behind a silver Toyota SUV in the area of Tuxedo Boulevard and U.S. Highway 75 around 5:15 p.m. on Dec. 19 and “observed the driver throw a burning cigarette out of the sunroof of his SUV onto the roadway.”

When police stopped Kitchel, it was reportedly found that his driver’s license was suspended.

Reports indicate Kitchel was transported to the Washington County Jail without incident.
